To receive the award, each hospital accomplished 24 consecutive months of 85 percent or higher adherence to all stroke performance achievement indicators. These measures include aggressive use of medications, such as tissue plasminogen activator (or tPA, a clot-busting drug), antithrombotic and anticoagulation therapy, cholesterol-reducing drugs, and smoking cessation counseling. All of these protocols are aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients. The 11 North Shore-LIJ hospitals that "got with the guidelines" are New York State-designated stroke centers, which means they have multidisciplinary stroke teams available 24/7 to assess and treat stroke patients. Timing Is Everything "With stroke, time lost is brain lost," said Richard Libman, MD, chair of North Shore-LIJ's stroke task force and chief of vascular neurology for the health system. "The Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Quality Achievement Awards demonstrate that our highly trained physicians and nurses are committed to providing care that has been clinically proven to quickly and effi ciently treat stroke patients and save lives." The Honor Roll Forest Hills Hospital, Glen Cove Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, LIJ Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital, Plainview Hospital, Southside Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital and Syosset Hospital received Gold Plus Quality Achievement Awards for meeting Gold requirements and adhering to several additional quality measures. Franklin Hospital received the Gold Quality Achievement Award. Furthermore, Forest Hills, Glen Cove, Huntington, Lenox Hill, North Shore University, Plainview and Staten Island University hospitals and LIJ Medical Center have earned places on the Target: Stroke Honor Roll for improving outcomes for ischemic stroke patients by achieving door-to-needle (DTN) times of 60 minutes or less in at least 50 percent of stroke cases for at least one year. Shorter DTN times improve outcomes by reducing long-term disability in stroke patients.
