This year's turnout included about 700 sophomores, juniors and seniors who met with representatives from approximately 35 colleges and businesses, including Plainview and Syosset hospitals. "The North Shore-LIJ Health System table is always one of the students' favorites," said Denise Delury, school-to-career coordinator for the Massapequa School District. "A lot of our students are interested in health care, and the hospital employees often bring visuals and the tools they use to engage the students." The December career event was held during the school day. In March, the district also held one at night for students in grades seven through 12 and their parents. Plainview and Syosset hospitals participated in that event as well. "It has been such a rewarding experience for our staff to help inform these young community members about some of their career options," said Margie Pemberton, RN, associate executive director of ancillary services at Plainview and Syosset hospitals. Hospital participants included the administrative director of radiology/cardiology, the director of rehabilitation services, the director of food and nutrition, the director of volunteer services, a nurse educator, a wound care nurse and a clinical pharmacist. THE NEXT GENERATION Staff members at Plainview and Syosset hospitals participated in Massapequa High School's student career day in December.
