Hospital staff members have been distributing information about various new apps for mobile devices intended to combat the recent dramatic rise in suicides in our area. Putnam County officials have introduced Putnam County Cares, an app that offers an assessment tool and community resources for individuals or families seeking help. Officials in Dutchess and Ulster counties have launched similar apps called Helpline and SPEAK (or Suicide Prevention Education & Awareness Kit), respectively, which alert users to warning signs that they might be at risk for suicide. "I think when someone is under stress or duress they don't always reach out," says Luanne Convery, vice president of Patient Care Services at PHC. "ese apps allow them to get the support they need." ese new smart technologies allow for broad outreach, from teens to veterans, says Putnam County Executive Mary Ellen Odell. "One suicide is too many," she says. ALL THREE APPS ARE FREE AND AVAILABLE FOR BOTH IPHONE AND ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEMS. TO DOWNLOAD THEM, VISIT ITUNES.APPLE. COM OR PLAY.GOOGLE.COM.
