Dealing with a Diabetes Diagnosis F ifty-three-year-old Mark Felix has been an avid exerciser his entire life who never had weight problems or any major health issues. So it came as a shock to the Manalapan resident when he was diagnosed three years ago with Type 1 diabetes, a type of diabetes that commonly appears in childhood. He had visited his primary care doctor, David Lombardi, MD, for a routine physical including blood work, which revealed the problem. "I wasn't experiencing any symptoms, challenges, or changes in my health," says Mark. "I never paid any attention to food or diet before because I was always thin and in great shape." Dr. Lombardi, a board-certified internal medicine physician with With the help of the Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center, Mark Felix is now managing his diabetes effectively and enjoying good health. Lombardi and Shetty, LLC, and on the medical staff at CentraState Medical Center, referred Mark to board-certified endocrinologist Kenneth Ordene, MD, with Endocrinology Associates of Central NJ and on the medical staff at CentraState, for help managing his diabetes. He referred Mark for diabetes education offered at CentraState's Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center. FROM UNAWARE TO KNOWLEDGEABLE Proper nutrition, including monitoring of carbohydrate and fiber intake, is an important part of managing diabetes. When Mark began classes at the Diabetes Center, he says he "didn't know a carbohydrate from fiber." However, he quickly became an expert in nutrition and other important aspects of managing the disease. "Mark made tremendous strides in understanding diabetes and everything involved with it," says Jennean Schram, RD, a certified diabetes educator at the Center. "At the Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center, we strive to help people fit diabetes management, including proper nutrition and exercise, carb counting, and medication usage, into their lifestyles—enabling patients to control their diabetes, not the other way around." "The team at the Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center taught me you can still live a full life with diabetes," says Mark.
