Taking a Proactive Stance on Health F lipping through an issue of CentraState Medical Center's Healthy Directions magazine, 84-year-old Mary D. Kiely of Freehold saw a listing for free peripheral arterial disease (PAD) screenings. "I've been physically active, eaten healthfully, and been at a healthy weight my entire life, and yet I always had major cholesterol problems, which were found to be linked to a thyroid disorder," Mary explains. "Since 1998, I've had heart valve surgery and four stents placed in my kidneys and my innominate artery, among other procedures. In spite of the hurdles I have faced, I remain very proactive about my health." "I hadn't had my legs screened in about three years, so I thought it might be wise to have my circulation checked," Mary says. "I signed up for the free screening at the Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center [HAC] at CentraState." PEACE OF MIND Robert Kayser, MD, interventional cardiologist with Change of Heart Cardiology and on staff at CentraState, performed the screening and found Mary to be at high risk of developing PAD. The results of the screening were sent to Mary's cardiologist, Ashish Awasthi, MD, with Heart Specialists of Central Jersey and on staff at CentraState, who is now monitoring her circulatory health. As a frequent attendee of educational health seminars, Mary says she's grateful CentraState provides so many opportunities for community members to take advantage of free health programs, screenings, and other services. "I always check Healthy Directions for upcoming events and keep the information given to me about my health whenever I attend," Mary says. "I'm very pleased with the services I've received there." Mary Kiely, 84, helps maintain her health by exercising and taking advantage of free screenings offered by CentraState.
