Home Improvement at The Manor her new home when she was admitted as a sub-acute patient in January 2010. She had come to CentraState Medical Center for treatment of an intestinal issue and experienced the full continuum of care, transitioning to The Manor for postoperative rehabilitation with access to the same physicians who cared for her at the medical center. M Doing well at The Manor, Marguerite decided to make arrangements to stay on as a long-term resident. "My husband, Lester, passed away in 2008, and I don't have any other family in New Jersey," Marguerite says. "My severe arthritis cannot be helped with surgery, so I am in a wheelchair and need help showering and dressing. The new massage therapy program helps with the pain." arguerite Beacham, 84, did not know The Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center would be PUTTING DOWN ROOTS Marguerite came to Freehold in 1945 from Montezuma, Georgia, where she worked in the fields, and found work in a laundry. Her late husband, Lester, was working in the copper works in Perth Amboy when the couple met in 1958. Together for 50 years, the couple had no children. Marguerite is close to her friends from the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Freehold, who come to visit. Unable to go to services each week, Marguerite attends other Christian services at The Manor in addition to the service led by her pastor, Troy Lynn Carr, once a month. "I enjoy playing bingo and going out to eat with other residents," Marguerite says. "Federici's Family Italian Restaurant is my favorite place we go." IN A DIGNIFIED MANOR Recent refurbishments made it easier for Marguerite to navigate the halls in her wheelchair. Hardwood floors have replaced the carpet, and newly installed handrails made of larger sections give residents support with fewer breaks to hinder unsteady hands. New furniture, updated bathrooms, renovated nurses stations, a repaved parking lot, and other updates behind the scenes have made The Manor more comfortable for residents and staff. Although Marguerite and her roommate get along well, they enjoy watching their own flat-panel televisions with individual pillow speakers and having a nurse call function close at hand. "I am happy here at The Manor," Marguerite says. "I am easy to get along with, and everyone is so nice and helpful. They even braid my hair." seniorsfirst CALENDAR OF EVENTS november & december 2011 Call (732) 780-3013 for reservations for all programs.
