Your Best Option Is having Every option C ancer treatments in the United States have evolved and expanded over the past five years. This is especially evident at CentraState Medical Center, which is growing into a regionally acclaimed cancer center. With the addition of proton therapy, CentraState offers all the latest cancer treatments available, which also include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. lEading TEchnology In the past year, CentraState surgeons have performed multiple procedures with the da Vinci® surgeons in the state—Jean-Phillipe Bocage, MD, FACS, and Robert Caccavale, MD, FACS, FACP, who were pioneers in the procedure and have performed more than 6,000 VATS procedures. RadiaTion oncology Expansion In February, CentraState will open its expanded Radiation Oncology suite, which will include advanced technologies such as: • Varian 21 EX linear accelerator: One of the most precise radiation therapy machines in the world • Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy: Provides increased and quicker conformality of treatments Surgical System. The da Vinci system allows the surgeon to sit at a console to see inside of the patient and operate robotic arms to perform the procedure in a minimally invasive way. As a result, surgeons have all the control of a traditional surgery but with better visibility and small incisions, so recovery is much quicker for the patient. CentraState is one of only a few hospitals in the United States that provides single-incision laparoscopic surgery. This recent advancement uses only one small incision at the navel to perform procedures such as colectomy, hysterectomy, and appendectomy, leading to faster recovery time, less scarring and pain, and reduced risk of infection. Mary Ann Reilly, RN, provides care to Tom Degliomini of Jackson at the Inpatient Oncology Unit at CentraState Medical Center. Another minimally invasive cancer technology that CentraState now uses is the endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS). EUS examines cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and rectum. EBUS is a surgical procedure used to diagnose lung cancer, chest infections, and other diseases that cause enlarged lymph nodes in the chest. CentraState is also a leader in video- assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) with two of the most prominent VATS The Cancer Program at CentraState The following is a list of the facilities and services that make up CentraState's cancer program: Support Services • Bioethics Rapid Response Team • Cancer navigator program • Financial counselors • Genetic counselor • Hospice care • Medical library • Nutrition services • Palliative care • Pastoral care department 8 January/February 2012 • Performance improvement/ case management • Pharmacy • Research protocols • Social work services • Support groups • Tumor board conference • Valet parking • Volunteer services Prevention & Education • Fitness and Wellness Center • MoleSafe program • Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center • Student Health Awareness Center Healthy Directions Diagnostic Services • Clinical Pathology • Diagnostic Radiology (ACR-accredited ultrasound, CT, and MRI) • Laboratory Pathology (CAT-accredited) • Women's Health Center (BICOE-accredited) Special Services • Camp Quality for Pediatric Oncology • Hyperbaric therapy • Lymphedema therapy • Survivor Day • 4D Cone Beam Computed Tomography: Imaging technique using video-like images of tumors in real time prior to treatment to determine if motion is affecting accuracy • Respiratory Gating: Evaluation of breathing to determine if treatment delivery needs to be adjusted due to breathing patterns • Frameless Radiosurgery: Requires no invasive head frame, for appropriate cranial radiosurgery cases "Radiation Oncology is dedicated to providing advanced cancer treatment to our patients in a supportive environment close to home," says Jan Dragotta, BS, RT (T) (R), clinical director, Radiation Oncology.
