CHI Franciscan Health hospitals recognize how personal this decision is and want to support mothers however they decide to feed their new children. Sometimes adapting to the process of nursing can be challenging. Our certifi ed lactation consultants can help. Offi cially accredited as International Board-Certifi ed Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), the registered nurses and educators with Franciscan Lactation Services are trained to provide support to new parents in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The specialists offer education to mothers trying to learn more about breastfeeding and guidance to moms already in the swing of things. "There are often mixed messages coming from family, friends and even physicians," said Sonja Dahl, RN, IBCLC, a lactation coordinator with CHI Franciscan. "We're here to provide women with the information they need to make informed decisions that work best for them." Additionally, the lactation team offers breast pump rental and purchase and also works in partnership with local Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program facilities to ensure that qualifi ed moms have access to their services. IS BREAST BEST? According to Dahl, one of the key messages communicated to patients is how breastfeeding is healthy for babies and moms alike. Breastfeeding can help new mothers lose weight after pregnancy and reduce risk for cancers, and for the baby, it can help prevent childhood obesity and lessen the likelihood of allergies and ear infections. Plus, the process of breastfeeding enhances the mother-baby bond. "We want to provide support and advice as early as possible to help every mom who wants to breastfeed," Dahl said. "We will work with them to face and overcome any challenges." CHI Franciscan Health o ers a strong network of support to help mothers breastfeed their newborn babies.
