Seize the day at Applewood Estates J im Boylan, 81, moved to Applewood Estates in 2009 and left the stress of caring for his large Brooklyn home behind him. The neighborhood he lived in was changing, and his home had not been the same since his wife of 51 years, Patricia, passed away in 2007. "Back in Brooklyn, we were friends with nine couples with 50 children among us all growing up together," Jim says. "When I go back to visit our friends who stayed, they are so limited in what they can do. At Applewood Estates, I don't have to worry about anything, and there are more activities than you can shake a stick at." GentleMen, StARt youR enGineS Jim was a member of the New York City Police Department for 29 years before embarking on a second career. At Applewood Estates, Jim starts his day early, sitting content on his balcony, eating his breakfast, enjoying the view, and waving to joggers. Then it's off to the races, sometimes literally. "We schedule a wide range of activities for residents, including trips to area attractions, restaurants, and museums," says Pearl Kaufman, enrichment coordinator, Applewood Estates. "Jim is part of an informal men's club who have gone to the New Egypt Speedway for dirt-track racing, a Lakewood BlueClaws minor league baseball game, the Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum in Teterboro, and Northlandz, home of the World's Largest Model Railroad." FAMily And FRiendS Two of Jim's three living children live nearby in Freehold and Marlboro. It's just a short drive to attend his younger grandchildren's wrestling and field hockey matches. He is looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild in March. Completely at ease at Applewood Estates, Jim enjoys working out in the Fitness Center and sharing meals in the formal dining room and Casual Bistro. He appreciates the friendliness of the staff and has made more than 100 friends. "I am in competition with some of the guys on how many people we know," Jim says. "We have drinks before dinner on Saturday and talk about the week. There are about 25 men altogether, and we are up to 18 regulars playing poker on Wednesdays. There are three women who play, and sometimes they win. I am as happy as I can be at Applewood Estates."
