President's Message… CentraState Healthcare System consistently seeks to raise awareness for colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States for cancers that affect both men and women. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 143,000 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2012, and more than 51,000 will die from the disease. Awareness is key in combating this disease. To help prevent colorectal cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends getting regular screenings and maintaining a healthful diet and active lifestyle. If we all make these kinds of adjustments to our everyday lives, not only can our risk of colorectal cancer be reduced, but our overall health and wellness will also benefit. To help aid the community with colorectal cancer prevention, we'll be holding two screenings in March: Colorectal Cancer Lecture and Screening for Men and Women on March 8, and Colorectal Cancer Lecture and Screening for Women Only on March 27. You can sign up for these screenings at www.centrastate.com/healthprograms. To help raise awareness for colorectal cancer, CentraState Medical Center and CentraState Healthcare Foundation are once again teaming up with Paulette Stallone, a colorectal cancer survivor from Manalapan, to host the Third Annual Paulette Steps Toward Cancer Wellness 5K Run/1-Mile Fitness Walk on March 18 to support cancer programs and research. With efforts like these, we hope to raise the public consciousness about colorectal cancer and its prevention. If you'd like to participate in this event, visit www.centrastatefoundation.org/pauletterun4cancer. To help you become more informed about CentraState's colorectal cancer studies and to read the story of one colorectal cancer survivor, please turn to pages 4 and 5. We hope to spread enlightenment about this disease as thoroughly as we can so lives can be saved and health can take precedence. Yours in Good Health, Community Voices… Dear Mr. Gribbin, I am writing on behalf of my husband, James, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2011 by Dr. Troy Sukkarieh [MD, board-certified urologist], who started him on hormone injections. James was referred to Dr. Oren Cahlon [MD, board-certified radiation oncologist]. From that point on, beginning with Casi at the reception desk, we found the entire staff in the Radiation Oncology department to be caring, understanding, and professional throughout James' 44 days of radiation therapy. Dr. Cahlon explained the treatment plan, as did Gloria, who reviewed the patient appointment calendar. The therapists (James referred to them as his "A Team"), Stephanie, Nathalie, and Susan, in addition to nurses Carol and Jen, were wonderful. Troy Sukkarieh, MD, board-certified urologist We compliment and thank your highly competent, skilled staff. It is evident that they are a dedicated team— there for not only patients but for their families, as well. We feel a part of this great team. James and Isabella Buckley Oren Cahlon, MD, board-certified radiation oncologist We wish to extend our best wishes for a productive, successful year with our sincere thanks. John T.
