Led by Rabbi Elliot Pachter and Ritual Director Charles Berris, members of the congregation took part. A poignant moment was when Holocaust survivors Zoltan Ruben and Shari Weiss lit the Yom HaShoah candle with Hannah Fine, who was honored five years ago at B'nai Moshe's 100 anniversary as a future leader of the synagogue. * Business leaders who reflect the strength and innova- tion of Detroit will highlight JVS' 19th Annual Strictly Business Networking and Awards Luncheon, 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 23, at the MGM Grand in Detroit. Honorary chair and key- note speaker is John Rakolta Jr., chairman/CEO of Detroit-based Walbridge, one of America's largest privately owned construction compa- nies. He will speak about rebuilding Detroit. Rakolta has been noted as a leader for taking on the region's tough- est challenges: job creation, education, diversity and health care. Strictly Business is a fundraiser to support JVS' efforts to put Metro Detroiters back to work. "This event exemplifies who we are and what we do," said Joshua Eichenhorn, Strictly Business co-chair with Jeffrey Tischler. "We will showcase the suc- cess stories of three people who JVS helped to overcome obstacles to employment." Also, event goers will hear from Paul Glomski, co-founder/CEO of Detroit Labs, who will accept the 2016 JVS Business Leadership Award on behalf of his company, and Zack Sklar, majority owner and chef of Peas & Carrots Hospitality, who will receive the 2016 JVS Rising Entrepreneur Award. "Rabbi Dan solves problems before others realize they exist," wrote former Detroiter Daniel Devries in his nomination statement. "While the rest of the Jewish community was organizing bar nights and singles events to fill a void in the social lives of young pluralistic and secular Jews, Rabbi Dan worried there was a spiritual void in the lives of this demographic that community leaders had not considered. Jumping into this space, he founded The Well, a plural- istic organization that engages with modern issues of significance through classic Jewish thought while leaving wide space for participants to adopt their own interpretations. "Rabbi Dan and The Well hosted Syrian refugees to speak about their experiences at the local Holocaust museum; organized a study of the Flint water crisis through an examination of how classi- cal Jewish texts have dealt with water; and brought 500 young adults and families to the Detroit River to cast their metaphorical sins into the water during tashlich as they consid- ered their collective sins, which led to the struggles of the city of Detroit." The Well is an outreach initiative of the Lori Talsky Zekelman Fund at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. * HORWITZ NAMED AMONG U.S.' MOST INSPIRATIONAL RABBIS Rabbi Dan Horwitz
