FOLK MUSIC ICON The Ark in Ann Arbor hosts an icon of American folk music: Peter Yarrow, the Jewish member of Peter, Paul & Mary — the group that popularized Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" and John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane" — co-wrote "Puff, the Magic Dragon" (not about smoking pot). He also wrote the anthem "Don't Let the Lights Go Out" in support of the rights of Soviet Jewry and the Chanukah song "Light One Candle." 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 8. $30. (734) 761-1451; theark.org. * age 27. First reports said it was a freak accident: He got out of his 2015 Jeep Cherokee in his driveway and the vehicle slid backwards, fatally pinning him against a metal gate at the bottom of the driveway. Turns out, a confusing high- tech shifting system has led hundreds of 2015 Cherokee drivers to think they are in park when they are in neutral or drive and many serious accidents preceded Yelchin's. A talented actor who appeared in several quality indie films, Yelchin broke out as a star with his casting as Ensign Chekov in the current reboot of the Star Trek movie franchise. His parents were stars of the Leningrad ice ballet, but weren't permitted to skate in the 1972 Olympics (either because they were Jewish or simply because the Soviets didn't trust them to travel). They gave up a good life to immigrate to America in 1989. The LA Times interviewed them shortly after they arrived and they point- ed to their then-infant son (Anton), their only child, when asked why they came to America. Tributes citing Yelchin's talent, intelli- gence and kindness poured in from many celebs, including director Guillermo del Toro, who worked with Yelchin for close to a year on the animated Netflix show Trollhunters, which will be released this December. After praising Yelchin's per- sonal qualities, del Toro tweeted: "As far as I am concerned, 2016 cannot end fast enough." * Rosenberg-Sapochnik Yelchin Common Ground zip line Peter Yarrow $ 3.00 Off Purchase of $25.00 or more Only good at Royal Oak 110 S.
