AWARDS Northwell.edu 13 TO FIND A PHYSICIAN NEAR YOU, CALL 888-321-DOCS. The more hours you clock in after the standard 9-to-5, the closer you could come to developing diabetes. Plainview Hospital recently received The Joint Commission certification for its advanced inpatient diabetes program and the prestigious gold seal of approval. AT HIGHER RISK FOR DIABETES Using data from the Black Women's Health Study (BWHS), researchers found that 1,786 of 28,041 participants developed diabetes during the eight- year follow-up period of the cohort study observing health issues among African-American women. Of the participants, 37 percent indicated they worked the night shift. At the start of the 2005 study, none of the participants had diabetes. TIME'S IMPACT The analysis showed that the longer an African- American woman worked nights, the greater her likelihood of being diagnosed with diabetes. Women who worked the night shift for one to two years had a 17 percent risk of developing diabetes, while women who worked those hours for a decade or longer experienced a 42 percent risk of experiencing diabetes in their future. Shift work also disrupts a person's natural sleep pattern, which can lead to metabolic changes in the body and make it harder for the body to burn calories. Researchers found that shift workers were also more likely to smoke and carry extra weight. PL AINVIEW HOSPITAL Receives Joint Commission Certification for This certification by The Joint Commission means that Plainview Hospital's advanced inpatient diabetes program complies with the highest national standards for safety and quality of care. This certification demonstrates a commitment to excellence in providing services for the advanced inpatient diabetes program. "We are very proud of our team and the hospital staff's hard work to achieve this certification," said Patricia Weil, ANP-BC, diabetes disease manager at Plainview and Syosset hospitals. Other Northwell Health facilities that have received this accreditation include North Shore University Hospital, Glen Cove Hospital and Syosset Hospital.
