Obesity is more than extra weight. It changes the body's tissues and hormones, causing health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease, and sleep apnea, among others. "When a person is obese, it is not just about weight and size but a complex hormonal imbalance in the body," said Dr. Manish Singh, Medical Director of Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Bariatric and Metabolic Institute. "This hormone imbalance is very difficult to bring back to normal with just diet, lifestyle modification, and exercise. The most effective way to normalize this hormonal imbalance is with bariatric surgery." This was the case for Dianna Garza. "I realized I needed to do something because of how heavy I was and how bad my health was," Dianna said. "At the beginning, I was very scared and hesitant about the idea of bariatric surgery. But during my initial consultation, Dr. Singh answered all my questions and assured me my health was his priority." To get the best results from the surgery, a patient also has to do his or her part by making lifestyle changes and exercising. Dianna had her surgery in June 2015, and she has lost 197 pounds so far. (Learn about Dianna's exercise routine on page 11.) LEARNING HOW TO BE HEALTHY AGAIN "After my surgery, I had to learn how to eat the right foods, and when the doctor authorized it, I started working out," Dianna said. "Before, I didn't have the energy to do anything, I didn't want to be seen in public — I felt I was depriving my family. Now it's wonderful. I want to be everywhere with my family!" This experience has changed Dianna's life and perspective. "For people who are overweight, I would like to tell them they have a choice," Dianna said. "At the DHR Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, they can help you every step of the way." Remember, it's more than losing the weight, it's about changing your life for the better. "Our program is very comprehensive and deals with every aspect of this complex disease called obesity," Dr. Singh said. "We are on par with the best programs in the world."
