" Communication among providers in the OB-GYN department is paramount to our success." — ALAN GARELY, MD, CHAIR OF OB-GYN AND DIRECTOR OF UROGYNECOLOGY AND PELVIC RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY AT SOUTH NASSAU COMMUNITIES HOSPITAL ENSURING QUALITY CARE The OB-GYN department meets four times a month to coordinate care plans with all individual subspecialties. "We have an active performance improvement committee for OB-GYN," Dr. Garely says. "The committee subjects all cases in the department to peer review for the purposes of better educating our physicians and providing a high level of safety and quality for our patients." Dr. Garely also uses his role as examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology to make sure physicians at South Nassau adhere to the highest standards for patient care. "By bringing in highly trained, qualified physicians from major academic centers to South Nassau, we've eliminated the need for most of our patients to travel to large centers in Manhattan," Dr. Garely says. "Locally, we treat some of the most complex gynecological surgical cases in the country." NEIGHBORHOOD ACCESS One of the most beneficial aspects of South Nassau's urogynecological services is its accessibility. Traveling to New York City for treatment can be cumbersome for patients, especially when it comes to park- ing and travel time. "Sout h Na ssau ha s ma ny of t he sa me resources as larger academic institutions for urog ynecologica l ca re," Dr. Ra himi says. "Patients don't have to travel to receive care — it's available right in their backyard." The intimate setting of the hospital allows patients to receive more personalized care, while at the same time, fostering strong bonds and communication between providers. "We are a close-knit group at South Nassau. We get surgica l instruments handed to us before we ask," Dr. Liberman says. "It's a very comfor table environment for us, a nd the patients see that when they arrive for surgery. They see we work together closely, and that relaxes them before going into a procedure. We like that setting." Sout h Na ssau Com mu n ities Hospit a l received the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades® in July 2017. From 2013–2017, South Nassau Communities Hospit a l h a s b e en l i s t e d a s one of t he top 100 hospitals for women's health programs from Becker's Hospital Review.
