www.centrastate.com Holiday 2014 3 A Healing Gift: The Statesir Cancer Center AT C E N T R A S T AT E Applewood residents Audrey and John Statesir's generous donations have led to the Statesir Cancer Center at CentraState being named in their honor. M ore than four decades ago, the ground on which CentraState Medical Center now stands was planted with potatoes, and John Statesir was in charge of the harvesting. Over the years, John worked his way up in the farming industry, eventually becoming a partner of Clayton Farms and marrying the farmer's daughter, Audrey, along the way. Now married nearly 60 years, John and Audrey have lived at Applewood, CentraState's vibrant senior community, since 2009. "We're very happy to be here," they say. "As there is everything you could possibly need." The Statesirs have been very generous with their hard-earned money over the years, donating several times to various CentraState cancer programs, such as The Karen Olbis Radiation Oncology Center, the Star and Barry Tobias Women's Health Center, and Cancer Survivors Day. Now, in recognition of their kindness, CentraState's renowned cancer treatment area has been named The Statesir Cancer Center at CentraState. Both John and Audrey are no strangers to fighting cancer—John has overcome melanoma twice and bladder cancer once, while Audrey is a breast cancer survivor. "We have been fortunate to nip everything in the bud," John says of their cancer ordeals. "We thought naming the cancer center after them was a natural fit, especially considering their experiences with cancer," says Sharon Purpuro, manager of donor relations and special gifts for the CentraState Healthcare Foundation. John and Audrey feel that their donation will help the already state-of-the-art Cancer Center expand its services to those who need them. "We think it's for a very good cause," Audrey says. "It will help a lot of people in this area." QUALITY CANCER SERVICES The Statesir Cancer Center at CentraState is located on the ground floor of the Donna O'Donnell, RN, Medical Arts Building. The area, previously housing the radiation oncology department, is now home to: • Cancer Resource Center: a newly designated space that opened in July and offers patients, families and care providers access to printed cancer materials and computer access to specific cancer-related websites • Melanoma Center: provides clinical detection, evaluation and treatment of melanoma • Lymphedema Program: provides management and relief from symptoms of lymphedema – includes treatment rooms and physical therapy gym • Tumor Registry Office • Clinical Trials Office • MoleSafe: a program to help detect melanoma at an early and treatable stage • Support Groups: offered for patients and families with breast, prostate, colorectal, multiple myeloma/ mylodysplasia, and leukemia/ lymphoma cancers, as well as for patients with lymphedema symptoms (support groups may be held either in the Statesir Cancer Center or at the Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center) PROGRAMMATIC PLANNING AND INTEGRATION The Statesir Cancer Center at CentraState is affiliated with Hackensack University Medical Center's John Theurer Cancer Center in an oncology partnership. This partnership has already provided CentraState with top-quality, state-of-the-art pathology services and expertise, in which CentraState now has access to pathology review by disease-specific sub-specialists via real-time connectivity to sub-specialty pathologists at Hackensack UMC. The future goals of the Statesir Cancer Center are to expand services to include GYN oncology, genetic counseling, and a comprehensive survivorship program aimed at supporting cancer patients throughout their journey with cancer— from initial diagnosis, through treatment and the care and support required after treatment is complete. The Statesir Cancer Center ensures the highest-quality care for patients through multidisciplinary tumor boards, where clinical experts in surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, pain/palliative care, and oncology nursing discuss how to best treat patients who have been newly diagnosed with cancer. The Statesir Cancer Center supports integration of care for the cancer patient by offering support groups, navigator services, ease of access to surgical, infusion services, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology, and survivorship, spirituality and counseling services.
