As spring approaches, we are excited to tell you about many exciting developments at Duke Raleigh Hospital. In January, we celebrated the second anniversary of our Advanced Digestive Care Program. The physicians, surgeons and oncologists in this program treat highly complex cases of gastrointestinal diseases, offering the best care for patients in the region. Their breadth and expertise are unique in Wake County, and you can learn more about our program on Pages 4 and 5. At Duke Raleigh, we always stay on top of cutting-edge medical advancements. To that end, we're excited to have five physicians on staff who specialize in urogynecology, a relatively new field of medicine designed to treat pelvic floor disorders. Community members facing these difficult problems are frequently embarrassed or uncomfortable talking about them, but our sensitive and caring urogynecologists, whom you can read about on Page 3, can find solutions. We're also eager to introduce you to one of our hospitalists, Nadia Pasha, MD. Hospitalists are physicians who diligently coordinate treatment with your primary care physician before, during and after a hospitalization. It's a program we're particularly proud of. Having these physicians on staff means that you are never more than a few minutes away from expert care throughout your stay at Duke Raleigh. Finally, I would like to highlight our newest offering, a Patient Resource Center in our recently renovated Duke Raleigh Cancer Center. The Patient Resource Center is designed to improve the mental and physical well-being of patients being treated for cancer, and it is being made possible thanks to financial donations and volunteer support from the Duke Raleigh Hospital Guild. Read all about the new center and the Guild on Page 6. I hope you enjoy this issue of Healthy Focus! Sincerely, David W. Nadia Pasha, MD Meet the Physician: Dr. Nadia Pasha Serving others in their time of need was something Nadia Pasha, MD, learned from her parents. "Both my mother and father were physicians," says Dr. Pasha, hospitalist and board-certified internal medicine physician at Duke Raleigh Hospital. "They believed in giving back to the community and providing care to all who needed it, and that had a great impact on me." Dr. Pasha has been working as a hospitalist—a specialist who treats patients during inpatient stays at the hospital—at Duke Raleigh since January 2013. "Being a hospitalist involves dealing with diverse patient populations and guiding patients in critical conditions back to health," Dr. Pasha says. "It's an amazing feeling to help your patients get well. We hope we don't have to see you in the hospital, but if we do, we want you to know that we work as a team with very close collaboration between each other so we can provide flawless care to you." Dr. Pasha received her undergraduate and medical de- grees at Punjab Medical College in Pakistan before complet- ing her residency and training at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Michigan. When she's not seeing patients, Dr. Pasha enjoys teaching the physician assistant students who complete their rotations at the hospital. Outside of work, this mother of three loves watching movies, spending time outdoors with her family and dabbling in photography. To learn more about our hospitalists, visit dukeraleighhospital.org.
