Cancer has a profound effect on every facet of life—looks included. And while beauty does not
seem like it should be high on the list of priorities when fighting such a serious disease, looking their
best while enduring rigorous treatments can help cancer patients maintain a positive outlook.
Enter the Patient Resource Center, which is being introduced at the Duke Cancer Center Raleigh
this year. Inspired by a facility at the Duke Cancer Center in Durham, it's a place where people
who are battling cancer may go to access everything from caps to scarves to wigs and makeup.
Additionally, the center provides educational resources to help families understand what their loved
ones are experiencing.
The Duke Raleigh Hospital Guild is helping to support the center by providing $35,000 as well as a
crew of volunteers to work in the center.
"There's not a single lady in our group who has not been impacted by cancer in one way or
another," says Jan Woodard, president of the Duke Raleigh Hospital Guild. "This project was a perfect
way for us to give back and support the Duke Raleigh mission."

"The Guild is in place to support this hospital," says Jan Woodard, the
Guild's president. "We very much feel a part of its active mission."
During the past several years, the all-volunteer group has launched
a variety of projects, one of which is the Guilded Lily Gift Shop in the
hospital's main lobby. The shop sells items meant to bring comfort and
smiles to patients and their families.
"We are extremely grateful to the many wonderful caregivers at the
hospital for their continued support of the gift shop," Woodard says. "We
try to offer specialty gift items that are difficult, or even near impossible,
to find anywhere else."
Proceeds from Guilded Lily benefit other special projects that
complement the needs and services of the hospital. The Guild's
health, arts and healing committee has found ways to use fine arts and
music throughout the hospital to create a more inspirational, relaxing
environment, and they even donated a baby grand piano used in the
Duke Raleigh Café.
For three years, Guild volunteers organized and hosted a two-day
Art in the Gardens show. Plans are in place to revive the show when
Cancer Center renovations are complete.
