Nelson for an appointment (248) 557-0109 www.traditiontradition.com S uffice it to say, this year's Concours D'Elegance at the Inn at St. John's in Plymouth is in the hands of a masterful car guy. Larry Moss — a car col- lector, financial adviser and a guy who took his bride to a car factory on their honey- moon — got involved in the Concours in the early 1990s but developed a love for cars while delivering the Detroit Free Press in his Oak Park neighborhood. "I would walk the streets to deliver the news and I would stare at cars," he said from his downtown Birmingham office. "Certain cars I would look at and say, 'I would like to own that.'" Graduating with an accounting degree from Wayne State University in 1973, he worked at Ford Motor Company but spent his lunch hour at Paine Webber on the first floor of the building. That led to a career in the financial markets, and a series of profitable option trades led to his first car col- lection purchase — a right-hand drive British Morgan sports car. In 1987, he met his wife, Patty, at his cousin's wedding in Maine. She was the best friend of the bride. They fell in love and got married quickly. "I had no interest in cars, and sud- denly I fell in love with a man who has real passion for them," she said. "It was kind of sink or swim." Larry offered a unique honeymoon deal. "I wanted to see the Morgan plant in Britain, and she wanted to see shows in London," he said. "I said we can see all the shows you want in London, but then we have to drive in to the country to see the Morgan factory. Little did she know that the Dutch Morgan Club was having its 50th anniversary at the time. So I then broke the news that while we're there, let's go to Holland and have our honey- moon with 400 other Morgan owners." "It was really fun," she said. "It was like having another wedding reception. They thought it was funny that we were there on our honeymoon." Now, Larry owns eight clas- sics, stored mostly in his garage in Scottsdale, Ariz., where the weather and the roads are more suitable to maintain a classic car. A 1965 Corvette Coupe is in their West Bloomfield garage and is taken out once a week during the easier weather months. He doesn't do the Dream Cruise. "It's not good for collector cars," he said. "It needs to be driven, not stuck in traffic." continued on page 38 36 April 28 • 2016 36 April 28 • 2016 Consummate Car Guy Local collector leads this year's Concours D'Elegance. 1932 Ford Hot Rod Larry Moss getting ready to race Larry Moss Harry Kirsbaum | Contributing Writer auto » Feature your business with HipCityDeals to acquire quality and eager new customers via our highly-targeted marketing.
