CARLA HOLLIS, CEO
Good news! Columbus County has
moved up in the state's public health
rankings. A year ago, a Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation report listed
Columbus as the least healthy county in
North Carolina based on premature death,
smoking, obesity, sexually transmitted
diseases, teen births and more. The picture
it painted was grim.
We all had a choice to make. We could decide that last
place was our fate and remain there. Or we could resolve to
make improvements, such as maintaining a healthy weight,
managing blood glucose, getting adequate physical activity
and quitting smoking. I'm pleased that, as a community, we
chose the second—and harder—path.
We're now 96 on that list of 100 counties. While we'd all like
to be much higher on that list, I think moving out of last place
is an achievement worth celebrating.
This issue of Health Matters is packed with news you can
use—from basic first-aid items everyone needs to have on
hand (page 7) to dealing with allergies (page 6) that are an
unfortunate part of this season for many. We're celebrating the
opening of our new pediatrics practice, which we share with
you on page 4. And we're inviting the entire community to
our open house on Thursday, June 2 from 4 to 7 p.m.
Also on page 4, you'll find a bit about how much we value
patient feedback. We pay close attention to every patient
survey we get. What you think matters to us.
This time next year, I hope to report that Columbus County
has moved up again in the health rankings. The physicians and
staff at your community hospital will do our part toward that
goal. We hope you'll join us on the journey.
To your good health,
Carla P. Hollis
