"Parents can enjoy their workouts without having to worry about their kids." SAFETY FIRST More than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger receive medical treatment for playground-related injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So it's important to be safe when participating in physical activities. "Summer is a perfect time for kids to gear up for school sports," says Debbi Green, ATC, athletic trainer with CHI St. Anthony Hospital. "If they're not active during the summer and then go right into school sports, they have a greater chance of sustaining an injury." Participating only in one sport can also have serious consequences. "It's vital to participate in dierent sports and activities," says John Airoldi, DPT, physical therapist with CHI St. Anthony Hospital. "Kids who only do one sport year-round are far more likely to suer an over-use injury. Children need time to heal and rest their bodies."
