sahpendleton.org /// CATHOLIC HEALTH INITIATIVES 4 Paving the Path for Prospective Healthcare Careers Cooking with Class In April, CHI St. Anthony Hospital was pleased to award St. Anthony Medical Sta Human Health Science Scholarships to 20Eastern Oregon high school seniors and Volunteers awards to two college-level students. CHI St. Anthony Hospital recognizes local graduating students' com- mitments to working in medicine, and we are proud to be part of their journey into the healthcare profession. The following students each received a $1,000 scholarship: James Bradt, Pendleton High School (PHS), who plans to become an optometrist Delaney Clem, PHS, who plans to become a physician Clancy Deutz, PHS, who plans to work in the medical eld Bruna Falci, Ukiah High School, who plans to work in the medicaleld Megan Glynn, Pilot Rock High School, who plans to become anurse Zoe Hern, PHS, who plans to become a medical technologist Sydney Jones, PHS, who plans to become a neonatologist Janeal Merriman, PHS, who plans to become an obstetrician Erika Parks, Echo High School, who plans to become a pharmacist Kaleigh Waggoner, PHS, who plans to become a pediatric nurse The following students each received a $500 scholarship: Tianna Barfuss, PHS, who plans to become a nurse Chyenne Carey, PHS, who plans to become a nurse Dylan Clemons, PHS, who plans to become a nurse practitioner Paden Flerchinger, Griswold Helix High School, who plans to work in the medical eld Jennifer McDougall, PHS, who plans to become a nurse Tanner Pearson, PHS, who plans to work in the medical eld Lauren Roberts, PHS, who plans to become a pediatric nurse Olivia Simpson, PHS, who plans to become a radiologic technologist Jason Townsley, PHS, who plans to become a physician Sarah Watkins, PHS, who plans to work in the medical eld The following college students each received a $2,000 scholarship by CHI St. Anthony Hospital volunteers: Rachel Phinney, Boise State University, who is studying health science with an emphasis in gerontology Rebecca Wagner, Gonzaga University, who is studying nursing For students at Pendleton High School, a partnership with CHI St. Anthony Hospital provides real-life experience. As part of the Foods II class at Pendleton High, students not only get access to a professional kitchen, but work several large catering events at CHI St. Anthony Hospital. Under the supervision of teacher Kristin Swaggart and Chef Justin Norris at CHI St. Anthony Hospital, the students help the kitchen prepare appetizers, serve food and complete other tasks. "We couldn't get it all done without the help of the kids and the teacher," says Chef Justin. "The students are eager not only to volunteer, but to learn and be a part of something." COOKING THE COMPETITION Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is an in-school organization that promotes family and consumer sciences education—including local, regional, state, and national competitions. Two teams from Pendleton High competed in a cooking contest at the Oregon FCCLA conference this year, with a team of three senior women taking rst place and advancing to nationals. Both teams practiced and prepared for the competition using the professional equipment at CHISt.Anthony Hospital. "Kristin and I are trying to create a future for these kids and develop a few future chefs," says Chef Justin. "We're here to teach not just the culinary arts, but real life."
