Farm-fresh Summer Bounty Mix up your grocery shopping with weekly trips to the Pendleton Farmers Market, where fresh, local, whole foods are abundant. Summer has arrived and so has the season for farmers markets. Here you'll find your favorite homegrown produce and meats fresh from local green thumbs and ranchers. Support local business and bring home whole foods packed with nutrients and flavor. "Fresh local produce has more vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients because fewer are lost during transport," says Melissa Naff, RD, LD, CDE, Certified Diabetes Educator with CHI St. Anthony Hospital. "And when you purchase food grown by someone in your community, you establish a relationship. You are more likely to go back week after week to enjoy the fellowship of food." LOCAL SPECIALTIES In the summer, watermelon is the star of the show at the Pendleton Farmers Market. But countless other types of produce and protein are also available, catering to a wide variety of palates. There are even local artists selling unique crafts. "You will find everything from zucchinis and strawberries to peppers, kale, and carrots, so you can fill your basket with a wide variety of colorful produce packed with antioxidants," says Christine Guenther, RD, LD, Clinical Nutrition Manager with CHI St. Anthony Hospital. "Some items are less expensive at the market than they would be at a grocery store, so nutritious whole foods are more accessible than you may think." The Pendleton Farmers Market is open every Friday through October from 4–7 p.m. on the 300 block of Main Street. To learn more, visit pendletonfarmersmarket.net. Market Tip: Not sure what to do with your farmers market haul? Ask the sellers. Vendors are often happy to suggest recipes and share tips for how to make the most of your purchases.
