Balloon Sinuplasty Solves Sinus Problems—Quickly Frankfort Regional Medical Center now offers balloon sinuplasty as another option for people suffering from chronic sinusitis. Last year, Chad Ahn, MD, otolaryngologist with Frankfort Regional Medical Center, told readers of this publication about computer-navigated sinus surgery and how Frankfort Regional hoped to add balloon sinuplasty in 2012. “Since April, balloon sinuplasty has been performed regularly at Frankfort Regional,” says Dr. Ahn. “Patients have been very happy with the results.” How Does It Work? Unlike traditional sinus surgery where doctors cut away abnormal sinus bone or tissue, balloon sinuplasty removes very little tissue. Instead, a balloon is inserted through the nose into the sinuses. Then the doctor expands the balloon to enlarge the airways and restructure the sinus area. The procedure is similar to balloon angioplasty that opens blocked arteries. Balloon sinuplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis and results in rapid healing and minimal pain. In fact, the procedure takes only about 30 minutes, and many patients return to work the same day. Who’s a Candidate? People with recurrent nasal congestion and chronic sinusitis should consider balloon sinuplasty as a gentle, long-term solution to their sinus problems. “Not every patient is a candidate,” says Dr. Ahn. “An office evaluation can make that determination.” Why Balloon Sinuplasty? “The hope is that this will be the only procedure a patient will ever need,” says Dr. Ahn. “Two-year studies show great success rates.” In a survey of research studies performed in the two years since balloon sinuplasty has become prevalent nationwide, patients are found to have “improved sinus-related quality of life” following the procedure. And for people who have undergone balloon sinuplasty at Frankfort Regional, Dr. Ahn says, “success rates and personal satisfaction have been very encouraging.” To schedule an appointment with an ear, nose and throat specialist, call Consult-A-Nurse at 877-FRMC-MD1 (877-376-2631).
