textileinsight.com July/August 2017 ~ Textile Insight • 25 from fraud and promote product integrity from source to shop. This new level of identification ultimately assures consumers that the product they purchase is the real deal. The company is known for a molecular-based tagging technology using plant DNA, called SigNature T DNA. These botanical-based taggants cannot be copied and survive standard textile treatment processes. SigNature T powers the company's CertainT platform providing users of man-made fibers and synthetics with a single streamlined platform to tag, test and trace products along the entire supply chain. Recent developments from Applied DNA Sciences currently available are: PimaCott/Wamsutta featuring SigNatureT DNA-authenticated Pima cotton. "We have also tagged Upland cotton under Homegrown Cotton and it is already sold at Costco in flannel sheets," says Wan. Another development is Loftex that features Innovate with CertainT and provides tracking and tracing recycled PETs (from recycled water bottles) in bath and beach towels. Also in the pipeline is a pilot program with leather being done in col- laboration with the British Leather Consortium. The active outdoor market is a growth area for Applied DNA Sciences. The company continues to both increase efficiencies and broaden its range of applications. New testing methods are faster and the science can apply to a wider range of natural fibers as well as synthetics. "The outdoor category is critical for us because it is innovative with materials," says Wan. "There is so much going on in the mill with all sorts of finishes, and the supply chain has gotten so complex that now it is essential to know that your product is authentic." Also key is the outdoor industry's approach to ingredient tech branding, a direction Applied DNA Sciences is pursuing. "We are bringing science and proof to product authenticity. And we're bringing greater awareness of this," says Wan, noting that this is what consumers are looking for, especially customers purchasing outdoor products. Applied DNA Sciences is also adding a new dimension to customization where shoppers can pick a textile uniquely their own. Says Shearman, "Whether used in suiting or for performance fabric for exercising, that yarn can be yours. You can have your custom clothing made with a DNA- specific yarn, for example."
