HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN BREASTIMAGING? After finishing medical school at the University of New Mexico, I began a residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Miami, which was one of the first adopters of 3-D tomosynthesis. Being exposed to that early on and seeing the change in care it effected piqued my interest. When I finished the program at Miami, Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas was getting 3-D tomosynthesis. Iwent there for a breast imaging fellowship, which I finished this summer. Baylor has a strong breast MRI program. My experience there exposed me to 3-D- and MRI-guided breastbiopsies and high-risk screenings. ose experiences allowed me to meet the patients I was making a difference for. For me, that's what separates breast imaging from regular diagnostic radiology. YOU ARE FROM HOBBS, NEW MEXICO, WHICH IS ABOUT TWO HOURS FROM LUBBOCK. WHY DID YOU WANT TO RETURN TO THIS AREA? I was motivated by the opportunity to increase the standard of care for breast imaging in the region that includes my hometown. Mark Funderburk [administrator and executive vice president of UMC] has positioned UMC Southwest Medical as a destination for breast imaging. Joining UMC was a great chance to marry my skills with his vision. e health system did not previously have a fellowship-trained breast imaging specialist. My arrival completes UMC's breast health team, which includes an excellent breast surgeon, Dr.Rakhshanda L. Rahman, Texas Tech Physicians. I also plan to create a high-risk breast MRI screening program and offer personalized risk evaluations for patients.
