Cold prevention 1. Wash up the right way Washing your hands is an effective way to stop the spread of germs that cause colds. To make sure your family is getting the most out of sudsing up, follow these steps from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: – Wet your hands – Rub soap and water into a lather – Scrub the back and front of your hands and between fingers for 20 seconds or longer (about the time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday" twice) – Rinse with clean water 2. Keep surfaces clean Door knobs, shared toys and other commonly touched items can hang on to germs for as long as two days, according to the American Cleaning Institute. Clean them regularly to keep germs from hanging around. 3. Confine germs Keep children home when they have colds. This lets them rest and recover, and prevents sickness from spreading. These three steps help put the sniffles in time out. 101 Community health and safety programs Cohen Children's Medical Center strengthens communities with events for families with young ones.
