EASE DEPRESSION, IMPROVE STABILITY Struggling with depression and taking antidepressant medications may increase your likelihood of falling when you walk or stand. To avoid this, speak with your healthcare provider about alternative ways to manage your depression. For example, he or she may recommend: Daily exercise Eating healthy, nutrient-rich foods Getting plenty of sleep Spending more time with friends and family Talk therapy If your depression continues, let your healthcare provider know so that you may find solutions. If your doctor recommends medication as the best way to manage your mental health, take steps to reduce your risk for falls. To make your home safer to navigate, install handrails in the shower or use a bath seat. Keep hallways and stairways well lit. Remove tables and other objects from high traffic areas, and make sure that carpets and wood flooring are in good repair to reduce your risk of tripping. BREATHE EASIER Living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can make the idea of taking a deep breath seem intimidating. But a breath-focused yoga practice may improve lung function and reduce the severity of labored breathing, according to a study presented at an annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians. Talk with your healthcare provider about how yoga and yogic breathing may fit into your rehabilitation. You may do the practice on your own or in a group and may tailor it to meet your specific health needs. If you have COPD, you may be instructed to follow a breathing regimen that focuses on taking breaths through pursed lips instead of the nose.
