INSIGHTS MERCY Fall 2017 MISSION The Mission of Catholic Health Initiatives is to nurture the healing ministry of the Church, supported by education and research. Fidelity to the Gospel urges us to emphasize human dignity and social justice as we create healthier communities. CORE VALUES REVERENCE INTEGRITY COMPASSION EXCELLENCE Reducing Pain, Finding the most effective way to alleviate pain can be complicated. CHI Mercy Health has an expert on the job. With 25 years in the medical field, 14 of them at CHI Mercy Health, Clark Kruta, a certified registered nurse anesthetist who is fellowship- trained in pain management, offers patients an individualized, all-encompassing approach to pain control. Clark followed in his mother's footsteps, becoming a nurse with a passion for anesthesia. When he personally encountered significant pain and couldn't find relief through treatment, his interest in understanding the experience of pain and ways to respond to it increased. He furthered his education, traveled to various clinics to gain a deeper understanding of pain interventions, and brought his experiences back home. Clark's passion for finding solutions to the problem of pain has now grown into the CHI Mercy Health Pain Service, where patients receive treatment for neck, back, and joint problems, including pain that radiates down the arms and legs. He also treats migraines and chronic headaches. Clark partners with his wife Stephanie, Operating Room Manager at CHI Mercy Health, to care for the Valley City community. Learn more about the Pain Service and read how two patients were helped on pages 2 and 3. "There is more than one way to deal with pain, and many times, it requires a look at the full picture of mental, physical, and emotional health and well-being to secure the best patient outcomes. I know what it's like to feel limited by pain, and I want more for my patients." —CLARK KRUTA, CRNA, CHI MERCY HEALTH PAIN SERVICE Inside Resolving the Complex Challenge of Pain P.2 Lori's Story P.2 Daniel's Story P.3 RESTORING HOPE Clark Kruta, CRNA, APRN
