He earned both his BS and MD degrees at The Ohio State University and, after residency training at Summa, moved to Richmond, VA, for a fellowship in sports medicine. While there, he was the assistant team physician for the University of Richmond and several area high schools. Now he's the team physician for his former high school. He also helps his father Timothy Myer, M D, a nd R ay mond Ac u s, III, MD, both Crystal Clinic orthopaedic surgeons, with the University of Akron football team. "I see a lot of throwing and rotator cuff injuries, so I do a lot of shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder replacements," says Dr. Myer, who is located in Crystal Clinic's offices in Cuyahoga Falls and downtown Akron. "Diagnosing and treating complex knee ligament and cartilage injuries were also part of my fellowship training, so that's one of my special interests, as well." He explains that, although he's trained to diagnose all orthopaedic 16 | Cleveland/Akron/Canton MD News problems, if there is someone else at the Crystal Clinic that has more expertise in the treatment, he refers to that person. "That's one of the benefits of being with a group that's so large and subspecialized," he says. "It is really cliché but true: A team approach is a better approach." Jonathan kase, MD A lthough not new to the a rea, Dr. Kase was new to Crystal Clinic when he lef t his private practice in Wayne County to direct Crystal Clinic's Wadsworth office. "He wanted to come back to Medina County where he grew up and where his father practiced. So we were lucky that way," says Dr. Reilly. "He's the first fellowship-trained sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon that's ever practiced in Wadsworth." A Medina High School graduate, Dr. Kase earned his BS degree at John Carroll University and his MD degree from the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo. After residency training at Summa, he completed fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic ■ MDNEWS.COM ■ JULY-AUGUST 2013 medicine at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia in Richmond. While there, he was associate team physician for the Washington Redskins and the NFL Combine. He is currently a team physician for Wadsworth High School. "I was active and interested in sports my whole life, so this [sports medicine] was a natural progression," says Dr. Kase, whose special areas of expertise include rotator cuff surgery, ACL reconstruction, and knee and hip replacement. "I a lso prov ide care a general orthopaedic surgeon would provide, from simple finger fractures that just need protection to fractured ankles and shoulders that require surgery." Crystal Clinic recently moved into a new office building on High Street in Wadsworth. A curbside, canopied entrance leads to Dr. Kase's office, which is equipped with digital X-ray. Therapy offices are located in the same building. kyle Nelman, MD Ask Dr. Nelman why he returned to Northeast Ohio after his sports medicine fellowship in Southern California, and he'll answer in three words — "family" and "Crystal Clinic." "We went to California to see how orthopaedics is done elsewhere in the country, but we always wanted to come back and be with family," says Dr. Nelman, who is from Cuyahoga Falls. "And after training with the Crystal Clinic guys, I knew it was a great organization. So coming back was a no-brainer." Dr. Nelman received a BS degree from Otterbein College near Columbus, OH, and an MD degree from University of Cincinnati. His fellowship in sports medicine was completed at The Sports Clinic in Laguna Hills, CA. One of the newer procedures he learned there
