President's Message… This is a milestone year at CentraState, as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the hospital and the 50th anniversary of the first community efforts to build a hospital. In the early 1960s, determined community volunteers worked to bring essential healthcare to families in Monmouth County. With thoughtful planning, capable leadership, and the community's continued support, CentraState has grown in the last four decades into a comprehensive healthcare system with the ability to provide state-of-the-art care and a full range of services designed to keep you healthy and out of the hospital. As a hospital rooted in the community, CentraState Medical Center is committed to meeting the specific healthcare needs of the residents in our service area. This includes providing increased access to primary care physicians and specialists in surgery and treating cancer. The Cancer Center at CentraState offers the full spectrum for cancer care services, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and wellness. This issue of Healthy Directions features articles that illustrate how our primary care and specialized cancer services are helping save lives. In other articles, individuals share how their lives were transformed using the top-quality, medically supervised outpatient programs and services we offer. In the years ahead, CentraState will continue to extend our reach to improve the quality of life of people in our community. Yours in Good Health, David Metz Community Voices… A Tale of Two Founders: A Lifetime of Memories When David Metz, 95, and Annette Horstman, 90, joined a local cause in the 1960s to build a hospital in Freehold, they never anticipated the extent to which their efforts would enhance the community. "CentraState has grown so much that it is almost unbelievable. Being part of it from the start has been a truly fulfilling experience," says David, who served on the hospital's Board of Trustees from 1964 to 1994. David was a member of a Freehold Chamber of Commerce committee working with area physicians and regional hospitals to gather information and start fundraising efforts. Annette attended the first hospital planning meeting at the American Hotel on East Main Street at a neighbor's suggestion and participated in CentraState programs until 1991. She has accumulated more than 6,000 hours volunteering at the facility. "As a community, we all worked together to build CentraState," Annette says. "We all became very good friends during the process, and I look back fondly at my time fundraising for CentraState and serving the community." Annette Horstman John T.
