SNOW SHOVELERS
Take Heart
SNOW SHOVELING CAN be an intense, vigorous activity that places
extra strain on your heart. Your blood pressure is naturally higher in
cold temperatures, and your heart requires more oxygen. These factors
combined may equal a greater heart attack risk, especially if you don't
exercise regularly.
A LESSON IN SAFETY
Protect your heart with the following safety tips:
1. See your doctor before you pull out the shovel. If you aren't
active or if you have a medical concern, such as heart disease or high
blood pressure, get your doctor's OK before shoveling snow or ask a
neighbor for help.
2. Ignore the temptation to "power through." Take plenty of breaks
and try to clear snow from walking paths and driveways as soon as it
falls. Wet, compacted snow is heavier and more difficult to shovel.
3. Learn the signs. Chest pain and pressure, shortness of breath,
nausea, and pain in your arms, jaw, or back could signal a heart
attack, according to the American Heart Association.
Physicians with Milestone Medical Group – Cardiology are available for
all your cardiac needs. To learn more or schedule an appointment, call
