THROUGH THE YEARS 1990—PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (PICU) CAMPAIGN anks to a fundraising campaign in 1990 and the generosity of the community, including a signicant gi from the Mary Covey Trust, the six-bed PICU opened in April 1991. e PICU established an environment dedicated to providing critical care to pediatric patients, who had previously been housed in the adult intensive care unit. 1995—CHILDREN'S HEALTH CENTER Opened in 1995 through the collaboration of Elizabeth Patrenos, MD, and Oscar Spivey, MD, Children's Hospital, Navicent Health oers healthcare options for children in the community who may not otherwise have access to a pediatrician. 1990 1995 THROUGH THE YEARS 1980S–1990S— RECRUITMENT OF SPECIALISTS "In the 1970s, critical care was the only pediatric subspecialty being developed, but as time went on, the number of specialties grew, and we brought in specialists to support our team," says Lowell Clark, MD, Director of the Pediatric Procedural Sedation Service at Children's Hospital, Navicent Health and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Mercer University School of Medicine. "We recruited a pediatric neurosurgeon, a pediatric general surgeon, a pediatric gastroenterologist and two pediatric endocrinologists in those early days."
