F O U N D A T I O N Laying the groundwork for fi nancial success 4 | WINTER 2018 ABCs of fl ood insurance A single inch of fl oodwater in your home can cause $27,000 in damage, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). And most homeowner and renter insurance policies won't cover it. If you have a mortgage and are in a high-risk fl ood area, you probably have mandatory fl ood insurance. If not, ask your insurance agent (or mortgage lender) to help you evaluate your risk by determining which fl ood zone you live in. FEMA recommends asking about coverage for both buildings and contents. And take note that most fl ood policies do not cover water damage from sewer backups. You can only get fl ood insurance from an agent or company participating in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). To fi nd one, call the NFIP Referral Call Center at (800) 427-4661. — Mark Henricks 4 | WINTER 2018
