Mobility solutions such as the iPad—and the applications that run on it—have the potential to positively impact patient care. However, these solutions further complicate the security landscape. We believe mobile devices will help to improve workflows related to common clinical tasks like collecting vitals, conducting medication This special section of HIT Exchange offers an expert perspective about health information technology. QUESTION: Should mobile EHR access be provided to nurse, or limited to only physicians? review and completing documentation. Additionally, mobile devices allow clinicians to conveniently collaborate with patients on health education, procedure descriptions and follow-up care without leaving the patient's bedside. Dignity Health recognizes the benefits mobile devices can provide, and we are actively looking at ways to increase their availability in our care centers. We have invested in mobile device management software to aid in the monitoring and management of mobile devices across the hospital network. This is a key technology component to further protect patient data. We have a mobility strategy where we balance our responsibility to protect and secure patient data with providing data seamlessly to clinicians.
