It's why I was thrilled to get a tip this week from my friend Matt Spickler, who helps make some 40,000 mouths water on a daily basis with his Instagram, @detroitfoodnetwork. Matt did lunch at Iron Horse in Royal Oak (316 W. 4th Street) and tells me its tacos and burritos are way ahead of the pack. Their spin on tacos uses two soft shell tortillas, held together by their own cheese "glue." Carefully cultivated with fresh and creative ingre- dients, they delicately balance the right combination of meat, sauce and vegetables. Matt says try the buffalo shrimp taco, served on a blue corn tortilla with a Southwestern take on coleslaw (pic- tured). Don't miss Chorizo with cilan- tro and onion;w their juicy and tender brisket taco with sweet peppers and onions; and a scallop taco with their homemade remoulade. For more photos from Iron Horse and some of Metro Detroit's hottest res- taurants, check out @detroitfoodnetwork on Instagram. OPENINGS It's been a busy couple of weeks in Metro Detroit, with a flurry of new res- taurants — many of them highly antici- pated — finally opening their doors. Jim Brady's Detroit in Royal Oak (1214 S. Main), which occupies the former Oxford Inn and harkens back to the original Diamond Jim Brady's on Seven Mile (originally opened in 1954 by owner Tom Brady's grandfather). Arthur Avenue in Birmingham (260 N. Old Woodward), Zack Sklar's newest addition, offering casual Italian fare. Greenspace Cafe in Ferndale (215 W. Nine Mile), a gourmet vegan restau- rant and cocktail bar. Standby in Detroit (225 Gratiot), an ambitious bar in Belt Alley, which aims to become one of the city's craft cock- tail destinations. La Rodinella in Detroit (2453 Russell), next door to owner Dave Mancini's first Eastern Market hotspot, Supino Pizzeria. The planned menu is rustic Italian composed of Mancini's original recipes. COMING SOON The Caucus Club, one of Detroit's most notorious haunts, will reopen with new ownership in May in its old home in the Penobscot Building. George Sboukis plans to revive the spot, which closed its doors after 60 years in 2012, with an Art Deco decor by Scott Shuptine Interiors and seating for about 170. Expect a lighter fare menu at lunch and tradi- tional steakhouse entrees for dinner. A LAST GOODBYE There's not much time left for a final visit to The Lark, which will end its three-decade run as one of the state's most acclaimed restaurants. Jim and Mary Lark will turn the lights off for the last time on Dec. 23. BEWARE OF SCAM The Oakland County Sheriff 's Office is warning the owners of restaurants and other food establishments to be mindful of an ongoing scam involving automated calls claiming to come from a county health inspector. A legitimate inspection would not be announced, nor scheduled with an automated system. Sheriff Mike Bouchard warns it's nothing more than an extortion scam and to always ask for a photo identifi- cation badge from anyone purportedly from the county. MAZEL TOV TO … Avi and Amanda Davidoff, on the birth of their beautiful baby boy, Chase Andrew. Brad Gershel of West Bloomfield and Daniella Malekan on their wed- ding. Hannah Borman of Birmingham and Marc Crane on their engagement. Don (Fagenson) Was, named to the board of directors of the Detroit Institute of Music Education. Chad Silver and Silver Tax Group, on a new partnership with 1-800-LAW- FIRM. Detroit's own Better Made Snack Foods, celebrating its 85th anniver- sary. And happy birthday to Laura Berman, Scott Sadoff, Aaron Hodari, Michael Kelmenson, Phil White, Jen Barish, Evan Ross, Danny Klein, Sid Barish and Mark Jacobs. * fressing with fishman arts & life Ryan Fishman
