44 | WINTER 2019 Spotlight Employee Spotlight P lanning one's fi nancial future — it's a common dilemma and something that can quickly become confusing when you consider retirement savings, fi nancial investments, continuing education, insurance and other features. Luckily, the American Airlines Federal Credit Union has Tom Decker and the Flagship Financial Group (FFG) to help members sort it all out. As Managing Director, Decker and his team of registered fi nancial professionals provide no-cost, thorough assessments, walking members through the process of creating specifi c plans based on each individual need. "The top two reasons members come to FFG are retirement and education planning," he says. But the group handles a variety of retirement planning features built on each person's goals. To explain the comprehensive plan, Decker uses the analogy of an automobile engine. "The engine itself is what drives the car, but you have several diff erent cylinders in the engine," he says. "So education planning may B E H I N D T H E S C E N E S : Tom Decker helps members get their fi nancial futures for tomorrow on track today B Y JA M E S M AY F I E L D be one, retirement planning may be another, estate planning, life insurance, long-term care, these types of things. We'll run an analysis for a member's situation and it all kind of feeds together forming the overall fi nancial plan." This is where the specifi cs come into play. "Depending on where a member is in their life and family situation, some of those components may be more important at a certain time," Decker says. "So if a member and their spouse are 40 years old and have a 14-year-old they want to send to college, that's the most pressing concern. Some of our clients have kids already out of the nest, so education planning may not be required anymore unless they're interested in planning for the grandchildren." Decker has over 20 years of fi nancial experience, but it's at American Airlines Credit Union that he says he's found a truly special place. "I love the Credit Union," he says. "The culture here is exceptional. I came from another credit union that was member- focused, but not nearly at the level that we are here. The Credit Union has made a commitment to serve all of our members, no matter where they are in their fi nancial situation. Because we are so member-focused, it's a form of member-give back."
