SPOTLIGHT 44 | | Fall 2016 O n a sports team, an athlete who can skill- fully play a number of different positions is called a utility player. The same termi- nology could be applied to certain positions of em- ployees at American Airlines Federal Credit Union. Known as vacation loan relief offi cers, these folks are there to fi ll in and cover for their fellow employees whenever a branch employee goes on vacation or falls ill. Workers in this position wear many different hats and could fi nd themselves in Hawaii, San Francisco, New Jersey or Oklahoma on any given day or week. Jane Middlebrooks is an example of an employee who knows a lot about this jet-setting job. Before accepting her current position as a consumer loan offi cer at the Credit Union branch in Southlake, Texas, Middlebrooks was a vacation relief offi cer for several years. "You have to be really fl exible, and you learn a lot doing that job," Middlebrooks says of the posi- tion. "I think it's one of the best jobs if you like to get up and go and you like to travel. You learn how all of the different offi ces are run and how things are set up. It gives you good experience if you ever maybe want to settle back down into a branch." The 10-year Credit Union veteran, Middle- brooks started her career as a temp in phone loans before moving to the Southlake branch, then vaca- tion relief and then onto an important role at one of the busiest airports in the world, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. "I worked in Terminal D, which is the inter- national terminal," she says. "It's quite interest- ing because you have all of these people on their way traveling on overseas fl ights. It's almost like you're traveling through them. You get to hear all of the places they go, and if you haven't been to those countries, they always take time to tell you all about it." Today, Middlebrooks' has come full circle and is back at the Southlake branch. "The positive point about being in a branch is you have the same customers over and over. They usually live in that area so you really get to know them. I've run into people that I helped here 10 years ago when I fi rst started."
